Aquatics Program Specialist
(Full Time, Non-Exempt)

Hiring Range is $41,159 to $46,372 annually based on
qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the District Aquatics Manager, this position
will oversee the aquatics learn to swim program coordination, swim
teams and group/party reservations, while working in conjunction with
the entire aquatics division to support overall aquatics operations at
multiple sites. Additional responsibilities include assisting with
maintaining safe environments for staff and customers; general pool
operations, staff training, hiring and scheduling; instructional
American Red Class courses; special event coordination, pool
maintenance; concessions operations and budget planning and reporting.
Essential Duties:
- Assists in Administering District learn to swim program, group
reservations and swim teams in conjunction with Aquatics District
Manager and Aquatic Coordinators including general program planning
and coordination, marketing efforts and customer communication with
a strong focus on safety, customer satisfaction and staff
productivity while maintaining high levels of participation.
- Monitors instructors to ensure proper use of equipment and swim techniques.
- Creates and facilitates a positive environment for swim lesson and
program participants and their parents/guardians through
relationship building, meaningful interactions, and genuine interest.
- Assists in scheduling, implementing, supervising, and teaching a
variety of aquatic recreation classes, programs and events.
- May teach all levels of South Suburban programs and program swim lessons.
- Leads, inspires and motivates swim instructors to continue
learning and growing their teaching skills.
- Assists in teaching and running swim instructor certification
classes, and teach/lead instructor workshops.
- Assists with monitoring/organize private lesson program.
- Assists Aquatics Coordinators in audits/evaluations of swim
instructors and lifeguards.
- Provides staff will all operational paperwork; including but not
limited to, report cards, manuals, lesson skill sheets, injury
reports, rescue reports, and chore lists.
- May support overall aquatics operations as needed and/or in the
absence of the Aquatics Manager or Coordinators.
- Remains actively visible and engaged with staff and customers in
the facilities during open hours of operation. Evening and weekend
working hours are required on a regular basis.
- Assists with hiring, training, directing, and inspecting work
performed by part time staff; assist in providing or coordinating
staff training; and assist employees to correct deficiencies.
- Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to
positive morale, individual style, quality, creativity and teamwork.
Creates a safe environment for staff and patrons.
- Maintains status of all required staff certifications.
- Assists with conducting in-service trainings and orientations to
internal and external participants on topics related to Aquatic Programs.
- Maintains compliance, including records and reports as needed and
required by state standards, American Red Cross standards and
District policy.
- Keeps accurate and current inventory of all equipment, supplies,
and other pool needs. Reports to the Aquatic Program any repairs,
maintenance, or supplies needed.
- Provides superior customer service and strives to create a
positive customer experience to promote on-going and repeat
business. Works to resolve any escalated customer concerns and/or
complaints in a timely manner.
- Provide a variety of general information to the public regarding
parks and recreation operations and programs; respond to questions
and resolve complaints as needed.
- Develop and maintain relationships with District employees,
vendors, various outside users groups and associations to coordinate
their programs, tournaments, special events and league play.
- Functions as lifeguard or swim instructor and conducts swim
lessons and instruction as needed.
- Oversees collection and handling of all monies for programs and
activities and ensures that monies are collected and handled
according to District policy. Maintains all financial records and
performs reporting.
- Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly
and calmly; administer first aid as needed. Completes
Accident/Incident report.
- Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the budget, manage
revenues and expenditures and prepare financial reports. Prepare
purchase orders, RFP’s, and invoice requests. Collect and record
payments/fees for programs and outstanding balances. Prepare short
and long-range revenue/expenditure projections, check revenue
streams through POS etc. Develop and recommend program related
costs, fees, and locations.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and tracking of a
marketing strategy; notifying the public of District events.
- Continuously evaluates Aquatic programs and makes recommendations
for improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of
communication, service delivery, expanding opportunities, and
physical improvements.
- Observe necessary precautions to assure general public safety;
inspect facilities for safety and maintenance needs by conducting
facility walk-throughs on an on-going systematic basis and report
maintenance repairs.
- Understands and is able to effectively work on basic pool mechanics.
- Maintains proper pool chemical levels at all times in compliance
with local, state, and national standards including keeping accurate
records of chemical readings.
- This position typically works five days a week including one day
of each weekend and off one adjacent weekday. On-call shifts are
rotated between this position and other full time staff in the district.
- Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay
abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of aquatics
recreational services.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
- Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

Education and/or Experience:
- Two (2) years of vocational or trade school training in a
Recreation Program field. A Bachelor's Degree in Recreation
Management, or a closely related field preferred.
- Two (2) years related Aquatics and Recreation service experience
and customer service. One (1) year of experience in a supervisory or
lead capacity.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- A combination of experience and education may be considered.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Current American Red Cross WSI
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED
- Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) preferred
- Lifeguard Training Instructor Trainer (LGIT) preferred
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator
(AFO) preferred
- Any additional related certifications.
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to
obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of: the general philosophy of aquatics and recreation
and its application; facility operations management; safety and
emergency first-aid procedures; customer service principles;
establishing and maintaining healthy pool water; pump and filtration
operations and chemical feeding equipment; planning and organization
of aquatics instruction and water safety programs; and budget
planning and management.
- The ability to successfully: establish and maintain safe and fun
pool environments; work evenings and weekends and some holidays;
work productively without supervision within established policies
and procedures; provide superior customer service and resolve
customer complaints and escalated problems; effectively manage
employees; handle cash-flow and daily cash reports with accuracy and
proper handling in adherence to established procedures.
- Ability to teach all levels of South Suburban programs, have
knowledge of swimming skill progressions and ability to program swim lessons.
- Ability to: safely extricate people from a pool who vary in
weight, with or without assistance, at any time; react effectively
to all potential mental, physical, and stressful situations inherent
to the duties of a First Responder; hear noises either naturally or
with electronic auditory assistance equivalent to that of normal
conversation up to 30 meters away. Must have 20/20 vision or 20/20
vision corrected by eyeglasses or contact lenses.
- Skilled in: swimming, lifeguarding, and lifesaving procedures and
instruction; water safety programs; recruiting, supervising,
training, evaluating and motivating employees.
- Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.
- Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and
high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with
coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and
vendors in a professional manner.
Material and Equipment Used
:
To successfully perform the required job duties, this position
regularly uses a phone, computer, cash register, credit-card machine,
calculator, printer, fax and other common office equipment. This
position also regularly uses and operates: first-aid supplies and
equipment; pump and filtration equipment; chemical feeding equipment;
various pool chemicals, circulation and chlorination equipment; and
simple hand-tools. This position may need to drive a personal vehicle
to various District facilities.
Working Environment
This position requires work in a variety of settings including
working outdoors subject to variable weather conditions, ecosystems,
and landscape. May regularly be in water. Pool facility environments
can be loud, wet, humid, and have extreme temperature variations. May
also work in busy office environment subject to continuous
interruptions. The schedule of this position varies and requires
flexibility due to a seven day a week facility operation. This
position typically works five days a week including one day of each
weekend and off one adjacent weekday. On-call shifts are rotated
between this position and other full time staff in the district.
Physical Requirements
:
Stand, walk, swim, sit, handle and operate objects and equipment,
reach outward and above shoulder and carry, pull, push or lift up to
25 lbs. May occasionally climb, crawl, squat, kneel and lift up to 50
lbs. and carry, pull, push or lift 75 lbs. or more with or without
assistance. The employee must be able to see close up and at a
distance with vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus allowing a
broad field of vision. The employee must communicate clearly and
effectively, must understand and be understood.
