Volunteer, Wave Shaper
The Wave Shaper Volunteer is an exciting volunteer opportunity that
assists with adjustments and tuning of the hydraulic wave shaper #6
located at the drop structure in the South Platte River, approximately
½ mile south / upstream of Oxford Avenue within South Suburban Parks
and Recreation District. The Wave Shaper Volunteer will receive
orientation to the area, equipment used and emergency protocol. South
Suburban Parks and Recreation District and the City of Sheridan are
the lead agencies responsible for the proper operation of wave shaper
#6. Colorado Water Conservation Board along with Urban Drainage Flood
Control District are secondary supporters of this recreation amenity.
As the Volunteer Wave Shaper it is your responsibility to be the
primary operator during river recreation season (usually April to
October) and to provide excellent customer service to the owners, user
groups and occasional drop-in river surfers. Typically this position
volunteers 10-20 hours per week; evening, weekend and/or holiday hours

Our Ideal Candidate
- Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with a high school
diploma or equivalent.
- Must have also attended one of the river Wave Shaper Orientations
provided by McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group supported by the City
of Englewood Parks and Recreation and South Suburban Parks and
- Must have at least one recreational season of specialized
knowledge in river surfing, kayaking, SUP or other river wave user
group and the direct operation of river wave shapers or be a
volunteer designated directly by McLaughlin Whitewater Design Group.
- Must have interest in working with outdoor enthusiasts and user
groups within the river recreation industry.
- Ability to demonstrate teamwork, creativity, innovation and
leadership in performance of all duties.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills are required.
- Must be able to communicate professionally with the owners, the
public and user groups.
- A combination of experience and education may be considered.

We serve residents in Bow Mar, Columbine Valley, Centennial west of
I-25, Littleton, Lone Tree and Sheridan and unincorporated portions of
Douglas, Jefferson and Arapahoe counties. We operate four full-service
recreation centers, golf courses, outdoor pools and restaurants, two
ice centers and miniature golf courses, and a BMX track, a sports
dome, batting cages, an entertainment center, a hotel and a nature
center. In addition, we maintain nearly 3,800 acres of developed and
open space land, including 119 multi-purpose athletic fields, more
than 100 parks, nearly 80 miles of trails, 60 playgrounds, 56 tennis
courts, and the 880-acre South Platte Park.
