Recreation Coordinator - Licensed Preschool & Camps

(Full Time, Exempt)

Salary: $47,000 - $54,440 per year

Position Summary:

Under the Family Services Manager, this position is responsible for the oversight and implementation of safe and enjoyable preschool and school-aged programs at the assigned location(s). The Recreation Coordinator plans, supervises, and promotes a variety of preschool and school-aged programs such as licensed day-camps,year-round preschool, holiday break programs and special events. Responsible to ensure compliance and maintenance of appropriate certifications and licensures as required by the State and Department of Human Services.

Essential Duties:

  • Oversees year-round, child-care programming and special events with a strong focus on child safety, program curriculum, customer service and staff productivity to ensure high quality program offerings and positive customer experiences.
  • Ensure all licenses, certifications, staff and participant files, and inspections are up to date and on file, in compliance with all applicable laws and regulatory agencies such as Colorado Department of Human Services, TriCounty Health, local Fire Departments, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Serve as program staff including, but not limited to Camp Director, Preschool Director and instructor based on current staffing needs.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, scheduling, counseling and performance evaluations for all staff. Review and approve bi-weekly timesheets and work directly with payroll to resolve any pay issues.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with communities and families. Create a welcoming and responsive culture. Remain visible and regularly interact with participants, special groups, and members of the public.
  • Provide superior customer service, resolves complaints and responds to inquiries in a timely manner. Keep records as needed.
  • Respond to program related emergencies such as evacuations, medical emergencies, suspicious behavior, etc. Includes performing first aid as trained, completing incident and accident reports, and following up accordingly to district and state procedures in a timely manner. Correct or inform supervisor of any hazards; complete routine walkthroughs of program areas.
  • Enforce high operation and risk management standards through combination of staff training, adequate procedures, enforcement and regular review.
  • Maintain a high level of communication through effective in-person and written methods for both internal and external customers.
  • Plans and supervises program curriculum, field-trips, games, crafts, creates snack/meal menus, and purchases food and supplies. Regularly evaluate and update as needed.
  • Builds healthy relationships with children by actively engaging with them, relating to them positively, and responding to their unique needs and interests.
  • Utilize and train staff in positive techniques to support and guide behavior and promote respectful and cooperative interactions among children.
  • Ensure all required participant paperwork is complete and on file such as enrollment forms, payment, policy manuals and acknowledgements, medication forms, emergency forms, and others as necessary.
  • Conduct staff meetings to provide and gather information, answer questions and respond to complaints and concerns, both internally and externally. Review program rules with teams and resolve any disputes in a timely manner.
  • Work cooperatively with all District staff and support various programs and locations by assisting as needed. Collaborate with supervisors of the other licensed child care programs across the District to ensure the best and most consistent practices.
  • Generate and maintain various reports, including, but not limited to attendance tracking, program reports and weekly reports utilizing a variety of software programs.
  • In conjunction with the Family Services Manager, develop and monitor program budgets and stay within approved budgets.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and tracking of a marketing strategy; notifying the public of District events. Promote programs through various means.
  • Prepare registration materials for program including class creation in registration software. Encourage participants to register for future sessions and programs.
  • Plan and organize special events. May include oversight of volunteers, soliciting vendors, partners and donations.
  • Keep abreast of Center and District programs, schedules, systems and policies and procedures to effectively share information with customers and staff.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of recreational services.
  • Attend facility, department and district meetings and trainings, as well as may serve on a variety of District wide committees.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and have an Associate's Degree in Recreation or Child Care Management, Early Childhood Education, or related field from a Regionally Accredited College or University. A Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
  • Minimum (3) three years of satisfactory and verifiable experience, since attaining the age of eighteen (18), in the care and supervision of four (4) or more children.
  • Strong working knowledge in licensed preschool and school-age programming also required.
  • One year of experience in a supervisory capacity.
  • A combination of experience and education may be considered.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Must meet appropriate Large Childcare Center Director requirements/qualifications and provide all documentation as required by the State of Colorado’s Department of Human Services within 30 days of hire.
  • Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, Universal Precautions and Medical Administration or the ability to obtain such certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • Satisfactory criminal background check including Colorado Bureau of Investigations and TRAILS/Central Registry criminal record review as required by the Colorado Department of Social Services within five (5) working days of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or have the ability to obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of planning and organization of childcare programming; recreation and its application; safety and emergency first-aid procedures; program management; customer service principles; and budget management.
  • The ability to successfully; establish and maintain safe environments for children; perform first aid and/or CPR in an emergency situation; work evenings and weekends; work productively without supervision within established organizational policies and procedures; provide superior customer service and resolve customer complaints and escalated problems; and effectively manage employees and budgets.
  • Skilled in: lifesaving procedures and instruction; recruiting, supervising, training, evaluating and motivating employees.
  • Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner.

Material and Equipment Used :

To successfully perform the required job duties, this position regularly uses a phone, computer, printer, fax and other common office equipment. This position also regularly uses and operates first-aid supplies and equipment. This position may be required to drive a District vehicle and/or a personal vehicle for business purposes.

Working Environment :

This position requires work in a variety of settings including working indoors and outdoors subject to variable weather conditions, ecosystems, and landscape. Regularly works with school age children in busy recreation facility environment subject to continuous interruptions and loud background noises.

Physical Requirements :

Stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time. Handles and operates objects and equipment, reaches outward and above shoulder to carry, pull, push or lift up to 20 lbs. May need to pick up children. May occasionally climb, crawl, squat, knee and lift up to 40 lbs. and carry, pull, push or lift 60 lbs. or more with or without assistance. The employee must be able to see close up and at a distance with vision acuity and the ability to adjust focus allowing a broad field of vision. The employee must communicate clearly and effectively, must understand and be understood.
