Maintenance Technician - Park District
(Full Time, Non-Exempt)
Salary: $36,419 - $42,631 per year
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor and/or Lead
Maintenance Specialist in assigned Park District, this position is
responsible for learning and performing the various skills that are
associated with accepted maintenance practices for developed parks.
May be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and be on snow
watch as well as work shifts deviating from this position’s normal
work days and/or with other work groups.
Essential Duties:
- Perform all cultural maintenance practices inherent to maintaining
irrigated turf grass parks including mowing and trimming, aeration,
fertilization, irrigation and renovations.
- Perform trash and recyclables removal operations. Clean and clear
park grounds and facilities of litter and debris, operation of a
trash/recyclables removal truck, common hand tools, installation and
removal of waste receptacles and dog waste station maintenance.
- Maintain public shelter facilities including roof repair, picnic
table repair, trash receptacle repair, stocking of supplies,
painting, staining, restroom cleaning, sanitizing, and grill
maintenance. Perform minor repairs to irrigation systems.
- Assist with the inspection of all parks’ irrigation systems and
drinking fountains on a weekly basis and assist with skilled
maintenance including irrigation repairs to mainlines, valves,
laterals, heads and pumps. Performs drinking fountain repairs to
cartridges and piping.
- Assist staff with District sponsored events, making deliveries of
materials and supplies necessary to meet the requests of facility
rentals and work orders. Set up and disassembly of event tents,
tables, picnic benches and chairs.
- Assist with the documentation and routine inspection and repairs
to play equipment within the district playgrounds.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
- Ensure proper care of assigned tools and equipment, perform
maintenance on small equipment and notify appropriate personnel of
need for tool, equipment or vehicle maintenance service or repairs.
- May supervise the daily activities of up to five part-time or
seasonal personnel. Duties may include, but are not limited to,
training personnel in proper park maintenance or snow removal
techniques, directing work, documenting field performance,
counseling and commending personnel on performance, and completing
assigned performance reviews.
- Complete time cards, daily activity reports, and other reports and
records as required. This position requires attendance and
involvement in meetings on project progress, safety, park
maintenance practices, procedural changes and other topics related
to the operations of the District.
- Perform snow and ice removal using plow trucks, blowers, shovels,
ice scrappers, de-icing salt, etc.
- While on duty or on snow watch, carry a charged and functional
District-issued cell phone, which is expected to be answered or
messages returned, in a timely manner or when it is safe to do so,
(i.e. not while driving, etc.)
- Respond tactfully, respectfully and in a timely fashion to
inquiries and problems in person, by email, phone and mail providing
helpful information and explanations in-line with District policies
and procedures. Handle confrontational or stressful interactions.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings, trainings and, orientations.
- Attend work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

Education and/or Experience:
- Must be eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or
equivalent with one (1) year skilled labor experience that is
inherent to park or related grounds maintenance.
- Any combination equivalent to one (1) year progressive skilled
labor experience that is inherent to park or related grounds
maintenance with an emphasis on installation and maintenance of
irrigation systems, playground equipment, park facilities and
furnishings, and proper cultural practices for maintaining turf grasses.
- A combination of experience and education may be considered.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to
obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of modern landscaping principles, methods, and best
management practices.
- Knowledge of operations and maintenance of irrigation systems.
- Knowledge of work-place safety procedures and the ability to
adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of laws, regulations, and methods of pesticide
application and the safe and proper use of pesticides and
appropriate personal protective gear.
- Knowledge in the proper maintenance and care of park assets.
- Knowledge in reading and understanding landscape design plans and
documents, and the ability to interpret sketches, diagrams, maps and plans.
- Knowledge in the use and general maintenance of hand, power and
motorized tools associated with landscape maintenance.
- Knowledge in the safe and proper operation of snow plows and snow blowers.
- Ability to train and supervise subordinate employees, community
service workers, and volunteers.
- Ability to exercise good judgement and practice proper safety
precautions at all times. Comply with District and Departmental
vision, mission, rules, regulations, safety protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities, weather events, and
special work requests.
- Ability to interact tactfully, clearly, concisely, and
appropriately with the public, District administration, co-workers,
and other agencies or contractors.
- Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent
interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally.
- Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced and
high volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
- Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with
coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and
vendors in a professional manner.
Material and Equipment Used
:
To successfully perform the required job duties, this position
regularly uses pick-up with manual or automatic transmission, snow
plow truck, ATV or out-front mower with snow plow, blowers, shovels,
ice scrappers, de-icing salt, trailers for towing equipment or
materials, tractors, and skid steer with various implements. Hand
tools including, but not limit to, shovel, rakes, screw drivers,
hammers, and wheel barrows. Electrical power tools including, but not
limit to, drills, circular saws, and jig saws. Motorized power tools
including, but not limited to, weed trimmer, backpack blower,
rototiller, walk-behind mower, snow blower, and chainsaws. Pesticide
application equipment including high or low pressure sprayers and
backpack sprayers, pesticides, fertilizers, and De-Icing salt. This
position also uses a personal computer, smart or cell phone. This
position regularly drives a District vehicle during the course of
daily work, and a personal vehicle to additional District facilities
for meetings, training, and other business purposes.
Working Environment
:
This position requires work in a variety of settings including
working indoors and frequently outdoors, daytime and night-time
including in dark areas, subject to variable weather conditions,
ecosystems, and landscape. Outdoor working environments can be wet,
humid, and extreme in temperature variations. Regularly exposed to
loud noises, dust, wildlife, and chemicals.
Physical Requirements
:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to
work in a field environment; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged
periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl,
climb with both legs and arms, reach, twist, grasp, and make
repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to lift,
carry, push, and/or pull/drag objects weighing up to 50 pounds
unassisted; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles while
exercising good hand/eye and foot/eye coordination; and to verbally
communicate and exchange information, or hearing and listening for
receiving and interpreting information and warning signals. May
occasionally climb stairs and short ladders; work in uncomfortable
positions for short periods of time; to lift, carry, push, and/or
pull/drag objects weighing up to 75 pounds unassisted. May lift,
carry, push, and/or pull/drag heavy amounts of weight up to 100 pounds
with assistance, up or down changes in grade, into or out of vehicles
or equipment, or over rough terrain or obstacles such as rock walls or
landscape boulders.
