Communications Supervisor

Hiring Range is $60,253 to $72,892 annually based on
qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position.
The award-winning South Suburban Communications Department is seeking
its next passionate, creative and detail-obsessed Communications
Supervisor. With a flair for writing and an opinion regarding the
Oxford comma, our ideal candidate has strong experience creating
engaging content for a variety of print and digital platforms.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Communications Manager, the Communications
Supervisor creates and implements strategies for the organization and
oversees the digital communications team. This position manages
day-to-day marketing tasks including email marketing, website and
social media content, while contributing to department-wide campaigns
and projects. This highly visible role incorporates graphic design,
project management and business administration skills. Performs duties
in a manner consistent with the stated values of the organization.
Essential Duties:
- Oversees digital and social marketing initiatives and
communications platforms, including websites, email marketing and
social media. Manages South Suburban’s online presence by setting
digital strategy across all platforms, streamlining the content
process and ensuring brand consistency.
- Supervises the daily work activities of full-time personnel,
including hiring, scheduling, assignments, and daily workflow of
assigned staff, and provides backup support as needed. Reviews and
approves employee bi-weekly timesheets. Provides constructive and
timely performance evaluations.
- Responsible for the District’s email communications outreach via
iContact. Designs templates, creates content and manages contact
database. Follows email best practices, tracks performance and
creates analytics reports to measure results.
- Supports internal communications by finding innovative ways to
communicate with full-time and part-time staff through digital
platforms and monthly newsletters. Creates content and visuals for
all communication.
- Serves as the department project manager by tracking daily
priorities and deadlines, assigning tasks and ensuring all
information is up to date and accurate using project management software.
- Primary content contributor for the printed quarterly
District-wide recreation catalog. Writes all catalog articles,
proofs for accuracy and ensures brand standards are being met.
- Develops creative concepts and copy for digital marketing
campaigns with the help of a graphic designer.
- Writes and edits news releases, online content, blog posts and
articles. Acts as primary copy editor for District and works with
departments to ensure accuracy of marketing materials for digital
and print materials.
- Maintains records and develops reports and correspondence related
to the effectiveness of new or ongoing programs or projects;
maintains and files related reports; and prepares statistical
reports, as required. Evaluates the effectiveness of online
campaigns using metrics such as click-through rates and conversion rates.
- Represents the District or department at community meetings, civic
organizations, and governmental groups; occasionally prepares and
presents presentations.
- Coordinates and/or assists with special events, such as park and
facility dedications, anniversary celebrations, and community events.
- Develops and maintains relationships with District employees,
vendors, the public, and various outside users’ groups and associations.
- Responds tactfully and timely to inquiries and problems in person,
by email, phone and mail providing helpful information and
explanations in line with District policies and procedures.
Professionally handles confrontational or stressful interactions.
- Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
- Attends and participates in professional group meetings; stays
abreast of new trends and innovations in print and digital
communications and marketing. Makes brand strategy recommendations.
- Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Public
Relations, or a related field.
- Three (3) years of experience with a variety of communications
disciplines including traditional media, messaging and content
development, social media, email marketing, content management
systems and other relevant digital communications tools. Five (5)
years of experience preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience managing teams and/or leading projects to achieve
marketing goals.
- Strong writing and copyediting skills.
- Experience using social media platforms, email marketing tools,
and website content management systems.
- Basic photography skills, graphic design skills, and knowledge of
video editing.
- Any combination of experience, training and education that
demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform
the essential functions of the position may be considered.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid Colorado Driver License or the ability to
obtain upon hire and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the philosophies, objectives, and practices of
marketing and public relations, including identifying target
markets, direct marketing, cross-marketing, creating partnerships,
generating publicity, creating awareness, and generating revenue.
- Ability to translate complex ideas into simple communications.
- Leadership skills with the ability to effectively supervise staff.
- Ability to set priorities and make adjustments as needed to
effectively manage multiple projects and organizational priorities.
- Ability to recognize and deal with administrative problems in a
constructive manner.
- Excellent communication skills to express facts, data, and ideas
clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Ability to build
consensus with digital communications staff. Talented storyteller.
- Excellent knowledge of AP style, proper grammar, proofing and
editing, and coordinating publications and other collateral materials.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of email marketing platforms.
- Knowledge of and skill in using multiple social media platforms to
include Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google.
- Basic proficiency with graphic design software packages including
Adobe Creative Suite, InDesign; design concepts; production methods
and file preparation for print and digital publications.
- Basic proficiency with HTML and content management systems.
- Must be highly motivated and take direction well.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision and with a
team in a fast-paced and high-volume environment with emphasis on
accuracy and timeliness.
- Strong planning, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
- Strong ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and to
proactively meet deadlines.
- Interpersonal skills with the ability to provide outstanding
customer service, establish and maintain effective working
relationships, and interact with others in a professional manner.
- Ability to work a varied schedule which may include some evenings,
weekends, and holidays.
Material and Equipment Used
:
- Regularly uses standard office equipment including a phone,
computer, and printer.
- This position is required to drive a motor vehicle to various
District and off-site facilities.
Working Environment
:
- This position is primarily in-person in a comfortable office
environment subject to interruptions and background noises.
- Occasionally works outside in parks or other natural settings
subject to variable weather, ecosystems and landscape.
Physical Requirements
:
- Sedentary work for long periods of time.
- Occasional physical work lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Sitting, lifting, carrying, walking and standing.
- Required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools
or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and
office equipment.
- Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information. Vision
acuity to see close up and at a distance with the ability to adjust
focus allowing a broad field of vision.
- Speech communication and hearing to maintain clear and effective
communication with employees and citizens. Must understand and be understood.

We serve residents in Bow Mar, Columbine Valley, Centennial west of
I-25, Littleton, Lone Tree and Sheridan and unincorporated portions of
Douglas, Jefferson and Arapahoe counties. We operate four full-service
recreation centers, golf courses, outdoor pools and restaurants, two
ice centers and miniature golf courses, a botanical garden event
